Battle Lake Golf Course has a history stretching back to the days when golfers putted out their balls on “sand greens”. Originally, Battle Lake was a nine-hole course; then in the 1970s, it was remodeled and another nine holes were added.
When current owner, Chuck Higgins took over in 1990, he made some renovations as well. Under his ownership, services and facilities have greatly improved, including the building of a tournament pavilion and one of the best practice facilities in the area. “The course layout was always inviting,” Higgins says, “but it had some rough edges.” Among the improvements were the additions of cart paths around the greens and tee boxes.
The course is located in a rural area about 15 miles outside Waco, Texas, amid a setting of gently rolling countryside that adds uphill and downhill challenges to the course. But this is a very user friendly golf course. If you miss a fairway, it’s still possible to reach the hole without significant trouble in most cases.
The back nine is bordered by the 80-acre Battle Lake which sets a beautiful scene as the backdrop on many holes. Our par-3s are as challenging as you’ll find anywhere. There are lots of dogleg holes that allow the long hitter to take a chance and cut some corners. And the greens are always fantastic putting surfaces. They’re a bit difficult because they’re small – making accuracy on your approach shots a necessity.
